FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM BUS TOURS

The Friends of the JHMT hold several bus tours during the year using a 1952 RT London Bus and most are pleasantly surprised that a bus this old can offer such a comfortable ride. The old London Transport bus's fleet number is RT2634 with the registration LYF 359.

The tours are subject to sufficient numbers of passengers booking for the Tour but to avoid disappointment it is always best to book well in advance. It only takes a phone call to the Museum to book your seat. The tours start with everyone getting together at the Museum where tea or coffee is served before departure.

Some of the more popular Tours that we offer are detailed below.

Johannesburg mining history tour

The early mining history of Johannesburg tour takes in areas such as Main Street and Simmonds Street in Johannesburg. Some of our passengers have lived in Johannesburg all of their lives, yet are not aware of the rich history of the city. They are also pleasantly surprised at the on-going upgrading that continues throughout the city.

Passengers receive a word of welcome and a talk on what to expect on the Tour.

This includes a visit to the Hector Petersen Memorial. Passengers taking in the ambiance of the Hector Petersen Memorial. A stop in Vilikasie Street for refreshments then on to Regina Mundi Church which houses the black Madonna.
Then on to Oppenheimer’s Tower. We then pass Baragwanath Hospital and Gold Reef City on our return to the Museum.

For the energetic a climb to the Top of Oppenheimer Tower is a must

Generally for our passengers a visit to Soweto is a first and is done out of curiosity. It is an experience they never forget. They talk about how friendly the residents of Soweto are and how clean the streets are. Not to mention the attraction of the big red bus that is loved by all, young and old. Even the taxi drivers hoot and wave.

Craft Market at Henley on Klip

A new venue which is proving popular is to the craft market at Henley on Klip, the grounds of which give an old English village effect. To enjoy the fare on offer don’t wait till the last minute, the stalls sell out quickly.
